Profile of a Substance Abuse Counselor Essay -- career choices, opportu

Introduction A career path which I am considering for my future is that of a substance abuse counselor. Substance abuse counselors provide assistance and therapy to clients wishing to stop their use and abuse of alcohol and drugs. I am considering this field because of my personal experience with substance abuse and a desire to help others towards recovery, as well. In order to further understand this occupation, an acquaintance who works in the field and who possesses a similar background agreed to meet with me to discuss her career. Interview Summary I met with Christine, an acquaintance I know through members of a twelve step program. We met for about 20 minutes over coffee. As we spoke, I asked the questions that I prepared, omitting some and adding others based on the responses given. The list of questions in reproduced in the last section of this work. Christine works at an inpatient drug and alcohol rehabilitation center in New Jersey, the specifics of which have been intentionally omitted. Her interest in the field is identical to mine; she has a personal history of substance abuse. After obtaining sobriety, she wished to help others with her experience. This similarity is the primary reason I wanted to discuss this topic with her. Christine’s current position requires a bachelor’s degree in a health related field, although she noted other counselors at her place of employment have master’s degrees. She is a Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC) in the State of New Jersey. Certification involved verifying education and experience, completing an exam, and paying a fee. There IS a connection between murderous beings, such as Ted Bundy and Charles Manson, and a common high school bully. Such characters share similar traits such as a lack of remorse/shame/guilt and changing themselves if they know it will help keep them from being found out. This is known as sociopathy. The connection between the two characters listed earlier, is that the root of their behavior stems from their childhood. More specifically, it stems from their upbringing. A child who suffers from maltreatment or neglect are two very common problems. There is even the opposite of neglect, a parent who praises and pushes their child to do their best, throughout their entire life, until the child finally snaps. Even symbolic aggression such as a slamming door or the silent treatment c an affect a child who’s already been abused. The more a child experiences these events, the more of this kind of behavior is planted into their brain. Over the course the child’s life, everything they’ve ever witnessed or experienced, has planted a â€Å"seed† in their brain. The more recurring the events get , the more fertilized that â€Å"seed† becomes; it becomes easier to grow and take root. Around the ages of ten through fifteen, the connections in the brain, or â€Å"seeds†, are put to the test. What they experience in that five year range will grow some seeds more than others, and let others die out. It is at this point in the child’s life that is most crucial to influence them down the right path and try to â€Å"prune† away the bad seeds and encourage the better ones. To do this though, people must first recognize the signs of sociopathy in a child early on to start taking precautionary measures. Common signs of socio pathy in a child are hard to diagnose because most children act like a nutcase at this young of age. Narcissism and poor impulse control are two examples, but the child can also have other signs. They are not definitive signs, but they are big red flags.
